The Pork Team Mission Statement
The mission of the Michigan State University Pork Team is to provide decision-makers with relevant, unbiased, research-based information about all aspects of pork production. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, we work with all interested parties to enhance the production of safe, nutritious, high quality pork products in an environmentally and economically sustainable and socially responsible manner.
Serving the Industry
The Pork Team works to plan, develop, and deliver educational programs. Meetings are held in group settings in various locations around the state. Every year the Pork Team conducts the Professional Pork Producers Symposium (February), the Winter Road Show (January and February), and State-Wide Pork Industry Information Meetings (March-April) to inform swine-farm owners and employees of new technologies, updated production practices, and changing economical, environmental and social considerations.
The Pork Team is comprised of both field and campus staff with expertise in varying areas of pork production and swine management. We work actively with producers on farm-specific problems. We offer customized, on-farm educational sessions to help production teams get started in production, change current practices, and assess animal welfare or the environmental status of their farms.
The Pork Team works with a diversifying swine industry, including intensively managed commercial operations, niche pork farms, sport farms, and youth show pig producers. We aim to provide educational opportunities for ALL aspects of swine production. Persons interested in attending programs or having an on-farm consultation can contact any team member.
